Tiny Rhododendron Leafhopper - feeding

Post by Bruce Williams »

Hi folks,

Well this is my first successful field trip with the Nikon D80 (well I'm pleased with results anyway :D ).

This tiny hopper measures just 7mm (tad over 1/4 inch) long and (despite it's bright colours under magnification) would have been surprisingly difficult to spot if there weren't so many of them. They hop and fly short distances but this one is feeding so I was able to take a few shots using a monopod.

This image is a manual merge of 2 shots.

Nikon D80, ISO 200, 1/250s at f9

These are really "racey" looking little things but quite beautiful. Nice details in this Bruce for such a small subject, you did good :smt023

You must be happy with your new toy Bruce. A very sharp and crisp photo. Great DOF With the 2 shots. I think camera makers ought to have a stack setting....takes 5 ( or whatever) shots at a pre set focus range would be great for tripod and static subjects like this. Just imagine the DOF.

Doug - That would be a great feature - I would use it for sure. ...and yes I am happier now I've started to get some satisfactory results.

jml - Yes they are colourful little fellows - pity they're not big enough to enjoy with the naked eye.

Bruce :D
