Very nice, Arlon, and welcome aboard! :D

Thanks for posting links to larger versions of your photo. Especially in the 1200x1062 ORIGINAL_IMAGE, there is wonderful detail in the eyes -- no doubt at all that the top of the eye has much larger facets than the bottom.

Did you get this in the field, or is it a studio shot? What equipment & technique?

Shot off a rose bush in my back yard. Lens was a dine 105mm with a stack of 3t/4t diopters and an manual old vivitar ring flash all on a D50.

Early in the morning, this dragonfly let me get within a few inches. I got one shot and he was gone. Fortunately the one shot was a useable one..

I believe the facets are different sizes because they serve totally different purposes. They hunt below them where they need to resolve a mosquito flying against a varied background and all they need to see above is a bird swooping in on them.

Welcome to the forums arlon. Excellent detail on that face. Great DOF and amazing sharpness. It Looks likes a "Blue Dasher" I posted a few posts back. I hope to see lots more amazing pics from you. :smt023

Erland gave us a good ID on the critter. Mine let me take about 30 shots with my little mini tripod but I cannot get that close with my equipment
