Sue,
Looks to me that you have imaged a very worn Vanessa virginiensis, commonly known as the Painted Beauty, American Painted Lady, Hunter's Butterfly, Virginia Lady, or American Lady, depending on who's writing.
A close relative of the "ordinary" Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui, in any case.
Both species are quite spectacular insects when fresh.
I like the composition on this. That background and the Buddleia flower make a nice switch from the usual situation where the butterfly is the most colorful part.

You know having sailed the seas and visiting from port to port here and there, I have on occasion had the pleasure of meeting quite a few painted ladies but...oh, but wait a minute, your...uh...talking butterflies here. Okay...ahem! Yes quite a lovely specimen, a bit ragged but at this time of year who isn't? The Fourth of July and other types of summertime frolicking and mayhem gets everyone it seems...even butterflies.
