I do not know the name of this one and could not locate it in my books. I need new books.

Sue,

Looks to me that you have imaged a very worn Vanessa virginiensis, commonly known as the Painted Beauty, American Painted Lady, Hunter's Butterfly, Virginia Lady, or American Lady, depending on who's writing.

A close relative of the "ordinary" Painted Lady, Vanessa cardui, in any case.

Both species are quite spectacular insects when fresh.

I like the composition on this. :D That background and the Buddleia flower make a nice switch from the usual situation where the butterfly is the most colorful part.

Thanks Rik. I thought it might be the painted lady. Yes, she is very worn as are most of the BFs in my garden. Once in a while a perfect specimen will show itself, but those are mostly monarchs.

Ah, I see my edit and your reply crossed on the wires. Again, it's a nice composition. :D

You know having sailed the seas and visiting from port to port here and there, I have on occasion had the pleasure of meeting quite a few painted ladies but...oh, but wait a minute, your...uh...talking butterflies here. :-k Okay...ahem! :D Yes quite a lovely specimen, a bit ragged but at this time of year who isn't? The Fourth of July and other types of summertime frolicking and mayhem gets everyone it seems...even butterflies. :D

A very beautiful picture Sue....I love the blue-green background, very tropical looking.
