Well, I wanted to do some hiking like Ken to see if I could find some of my first Myxos. So I went to the local river park (about 15min. walk from my house) and instead of walking on the path, I went through the woods and I found my first slime molds. It was dark in the woods (was cloudy also) I forgot to bring my little tripod so I had to hand hold the camera and swat the sketters away at the same time. I tell you, the path is pretty populated so people were looking at me like I was some kind of nut, laying on the ground next to a wet, mossy log in the woods. I always made sure they saw the camera in my hands. I did not try to do any Kind of ID on them, I am working two jobs now (started a new PT job last week) and have no time to do anything. I think they will be a little sharper using the tripod next time.

Great job Doug!
You are very skilled with that closeup lens (even without the tripod!).
Yep, always show the camera in your hands lying on the ground. Otherwise people could call the emergency.
Rik, what the slime molds have with the refrigerator?

Well, it just seems like most of the specimens I bring home end up in the refrigerator at some point. So far she's been pretty tolerant about the caterpillars and the spiders and the wooly aphids and the flying ants and the click beetles and the...well, tonight it's the wasps. Then there are the mosses and the regular molds and the... I can go on like this for quite some time.MacroLuv wrote:Rik, what the slime molds have with the refrigerator?
Perhaps the refrigerator would not be the proper place for slime molds. That would leave...the kitchen countertops. YES, the KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS!! No, let's not go there...
Is it more clear now?

Most slime molds are easily kept on their substrates in small cardboard boxes you can by at Wal Mart, in the arts and crafts section. When the substrate dries, using wood glue or Elmers, glue them to the inside of the box lid. Then they are protected from dust, abuse, and knocking around inside the box but readily available to photograph using what ever means you like.
Looks as though you made quite a haul there Doug, glad that you found a few of them. Excellent images by the way. You and others maybe interested in this for ID purposes without a microscope.

Wow Doug, for your first myxo hunt you did very well. Swatting the skeeters, getting muddy and looking foolish are all part of the game. I have been looking for some of the white ones you shot in the center image but have been unsuccessful. The first image displays a subject I have never seen. Congratulations.

A very hot weather here (almost 40C degree or about 104F) so I was a little bit lazy to think.
Must say you have a very very tolerant wife. Most of the others would get an ultimatum: You or your bugs get out of my house!
Interestingly that "you" actually means both!
