Its been awhile, but I'm still around. Was watering the veggies the other day and came across this crab spider with an afternoon snack.

Image

After it got a better hold on things the spider drew itself back up to the leaf.

I had a tough time with these as the wind immediately began blowing when I picked up the camera.

I love predator--prey photos Gordon. This spider must have snuck up on the poor bee from behind. Usually you see them biting around the head area. This guy went right for the tenderloin.

Well caught pics but they are rather 'noisey'
Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday... and all's well!

Hi Gordon

I think what Phil means is the images have a grain to them. Also the first one is larger than 800 pixels on the longest side, which is the limit for the forum.

In any case, an excellent capture on the action.

Sue
Many thanks. I wondered if the grain was what he was referring to, for the life of me I can not figure where it came from although I have noticed a bit of a drop off in quality from my camera lately. I will resize and post the larger image. Ooops

Well you certainly answered my question here as to if crab spiders spinerettes were still functional:-

That first picture is a marvelous capture -- perfect focus on the entire dragline as well as the spider and prey -- very nice!

The resized version looks better from a noise standpoint, too. (I saw the full-sized version earlier.)

Thanks Rik. When I resized, I did a bit of noise cleanup as well. The noise is bothering me, I hope my camera is not getting ready to bite the dust.

Dave as you have noted the spinerettes do work. I commonly find crabs in little silk enclosures similar to those made by jumpers. Usually they will make these when laying eggs.
