Hover fly with black and white abdomen

Post by Bruce Williams »

Hi folks,

Hover fly (possibly Syrphus sps.) taken in my garden this afternoon.

Approximately 12mm long.

Minolta A2: hand held, 1/200s at f/5 (fill flash) plus some post processing on CS2.

Nice capture Bruce. These little guys are difficult to get a photo of, but you did an excellent job.

Yes, A very nice photo Bruce. Nice sharp focus and great DOF. I wonder why it needs such big eyes (for a fly) :-k

Sue and Doug - Thanks for your comments. Yes I find that only about 1 in 4 of my hover fly pics are keepers, most being rejected through motion blur. Interesting about the huge eyes on this species Doug as some hover flys have relatively small eyes?

Bruce :D
