Bush cricket (nymph)

Post by Bruce Williams »

Hi folks,

Took this photo this afternoon at Salcey Wood, Buckinghamshire. You could walk for ages and not see one of them and then suddenly come across ten or more within a one or two meter area. Fortunately they're quite easy to spot as they are very bright and shiny.

They are very variable in size ranging from less than 10mm to about 15mm.

Now, I think (based on my Collins Field Guide) that this is a nymph of the Dark Bush-cricket Pholidoptera griseoaptera - see also this website. Not sure on gender as I've been unable to find pics showing gender differences in nymph stage. Sexual dimorphism in imago is considerable.

An Excellent photo Bruce. Very sharp with nice detail and great DOF. The leaf makes a perfect backgound.

Thanks Doug - Getting a shot of this character was quite a challenge as he (or she) is very tiny (approx 1cm body length) and VERY shiny - and he/she was in a dark area of the hedgerow so flash was essential. On getting home I had to scrap more than half the shots due to excessive reflection.
