A Successful Hunt - with Neat comparison

Post by Bruce Williams »

Hi folks,

Having recently seen and photographed a male Scorpion Fly I thought I'd try and get a shot of the female of the species. Well after completely blanking on two visits to Salcey Forest earlier this week, today I found my lady and managed to get one reasonable shot (smug, self satisfied emoticon). Note the absence of the "scorpion tail" in the female.

I also saw and photographed another male.

I thought as a gesture of respectful contrition to Rik and Mike I'd run the posted image through Neat Image using auto/default settings with no further CS2 adjustments - and post both images.

Size of insect ~14mm.

Bruce :D

This is good! Now I know how to tell them apart  . The Scorpion Fly that I photographed sometime back was a female then, if the male is the only one with the stinger-like appendage. Wonderful images there Bruce, lots of detail :D

Thank you for the comparison Bruce. As can instantly be seen, there is a lot less noise in image 2 while the subject remains sharp and clear. :)

Great shot.

Excellent hunt Bruce. Great images. Are you using the full version of Neat Image? Sometimes when I use the free vesion, it doesn`t seem to do very much.

And I appreciate it very much! :D

This comparison is pretty convincing. Neat Image did a good job of deciding what was noise and what was texture, then killing the one while leaving the other. Maybe it's time for me to download a new demo.

Nice job on the scorpionfly, by the way -- these are the best of the beasts that I can recall seeing.

Thanks for all your comments guys.

Doug - This is the demo version. I think it contains most of the functionality of the full product however SAVE is restricted to jpeg with no control over compaction.
