A Macro Study of Industrial Iron Oxidation

Post by beetleman »

OK, OK, just rust. First bolt is 3/8" (10mm) head (I love the rainbow color of the rust on the head). The second one is 1/2" (13mm not including washer) and the wire is 3/8" (10mm) wide.

Three interesting studies Doug.

It's a real challenge to see and create art from something so unlikely as a rusty piece of iron. I think you've succeeded particularly well with pic2 and pic3.

In pic2 the muted colour and texture of old wood grain really work well with the rusty fixing. The linear grain structure creates an interesting geometric counterpoint to the circular washer and the lines of the bolt head and triangular motif.

If pic2 is a crop from a larger photo it might be interesting to play around with the position of the bolt - perhaps experimenting with the rule of thirds? Pic1 conforms well to this principle and in consequence has a very pleasing and "balanced" feel to it.

IMO pic3 is all about form and texture and I think it works pretty well at grabbing and holding interest :smt023

A neat subject, especially #3. But don't forget, real ARE-TEESTS don't take pictures of bolts, they make photographs of "fasteners"!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions friends. I was just looking for a theme to shoot and thought oxidation and "fasteners" would fit a different bill.
