Rubbish background!

Post by DaveW »

Why will they not land on decent backgrounds in my garden?

Image

And I still cannot get all the wings in focus using available light! I will have to go to flash. ISO 100, 1/160th @ f9, focal length 180mm, Shutter priority in available light.

A very upclose blow fly. I like the shadowing on the wings..brings out lots of detail IMO. At least the background is not some kind of dung

That background is not so bad! It gives a kind of cubist, constructivism feel to the image.

And what is wrong with dung as a background, Doug? When you photograph for example dungflies this dung background can show a nice variety of browns and the eggs and larvae can be seen shining through the dung.

And on the photograph you will not be distracted by the smell!

I think we should be less opposed to excrements. We should treasure it as a reminder of the good meals we had. :) :)

Did you know I have been photographing (stereoscopy) a machine that produces dung? all over the globe? Next week it will be in Beijing. Me too!

It looks very good in my opinion Dave. :D
Nothing bad with background. Maybe you should try a higher ISO settings to get a little bit more DOF.

Not sure about that With more DOF the background will perhaps be too prominent. I prefer the more dream-like shallow DOF :) And why should everything be sharp? But perhaps in this case it would be nice to have the hairs on the back of the fly in focus. If you make 2 or 3 images you can combine these, get all the parts of teh fly in focus and retain a shallow DOF for the background.

But of course I always like to make things more complicated than necessary:)

Hmmm... :-k To do all this we should propose some whiskey to the fly at first!
