Interesting. I think have photographed the same species this week. It is a Lestes species. also called spreadwings. They are damselflies that do spread their wings. I think the white spots on the wings could indicate the species. But I am not sure.

One comment I like to make is that the scenery in the background is rather prominent. :) Next time I would suggest to take a shovel and remove that street lantern in the back! :D

Wim: The spots on the wings are indeed a way of identifying the species.. it is not very excact but a lot of them haver different marikings on their wings.
The lanter is in our backyard.. so my parents would not be al to enthiousiastic about that plan I gues

I did try to make the bg as faded out as possible.. but, you might have noticed today Wim, we had tough light today. changing from sunny to shady overcast in seconds everytime.. so I couldn't get the DOF I wanted to get with my compact camera  I have to get me a DSLR soon with some good flashers and a nice lightstrong lens

All the best and thank you for the comments,

Tom B

Nice shot there TomB. :D As for the lantern post in the background, yeah it could go and so could that twig or whatever it is running diagonally behind the dragonfly. I too find it hard sometimes to really pay attention to my backgrounds because I am so caught up with the subject, so don't feel bad. However I am learning to pay more attention to it. Perhaps if the dragonfly was shot at another angle you could have avoided all that but then again, sometimes you have no choice and have to take what you can get. Thanks TomB! :D
