Nikola, this is a nice shot of one of spring's best butterflies!
Ken, the dark markings of Anthocharis (the orange-tips) are a lot like those of Euchloe (the marbles), for example shown in my post here. The marks are due to a mix of black and green-yellow scales, substituting for white.
I like your characterization that these marks look painted on. They are much more randomly textured and less related to the pattern of veins, than most butterflies spots and stripes.
