Gender difference is probably right, however I just wondered if sexual maturity might be another possibility - ie, make it through to a final molt into a sexually mature adult and yer gets yer white stripes!
Wonderful Pictures Ken. The spiders are fantastic looking. I like the angle in the second picture, very sharp looking The second spider looks like a male. It looks like there are pedipalps.
