Tiniest toadstool in Britain?

Post by Bruce Williams »

Hi folks,

Well it probably isn't the smallest , but with a cap diameter of less than 5mm it's the tiniest cap fungus (with gills) that I've come across - so far anyway....

You may think that Ken and Craig had it tough on their Amazon trip, but believe me what they went through was as nothing compared to the lengths I had to go to to get this photo. You won't believe this but, after a gruelling 20 minute drive to Stockgrove Country Park, Buckinghamshire, I had to lie full length on damp grass to get this shot. In full view of other dog walkers too!

So enjoy in full knowledge of the hardship and personal sacrifice involved...

Bruce :D

ps uncertain of identification so any help appreciated.

Thanks Doug - interesting you should say about your terrarium - I saw a number of these small fungi (usually solitary or in loose groups of two) and they were always associated with patches of moss.

Well Bruce, considering the hardships listed, lets be glad that no ones dog had left any other "hardships" on the grass you stretched out on. By the way, just as these little fungi are or seem to be associated with bryophytes, there are some myxomycetes that are also inclined to favor mossy areas. Beautiful image. :D
