Carpenter bee

Post by MacroLuv »

Carpenter bee, Xylocopa violacea, if I'm right. :D
I found ID thanks to Gordon's response to my topic Black & white bee. He mentioned family Anthophoridae which, with help of little googling, leads me indirectly to identification of this black/blue/violet metallic bee of another family. Thank you Gordon. You are of great help. :smt023
If you look closer seems like the abdomen is connected to the rest of the body at two points with hole between.
You can see this kind of bee in my old forums post also.

Here in companionship with another black & yellow bee (abdomen pattern like Black & white bee) possibly also family Anthophoridae or even Carpenter bee? :-k

He is sure dark! I saw what I think are these same bees in Slovenia when I visited, but didn't get any good photographs. :-(

Great shots. The yellow bee is a Megachilid, commonly called leaf cutters, this particular group actually constructs their little nests out of resin collected from plants instead of leaf parts. It is possibly in the genus Anthidium however there are a number of very similar genera in this group.
