Amazon Pics Part 39

Post by Moebius »

Ok, time for a another strange one. Starting now and for the next few days, I will be showing some pics from a different part of the rainforest. On this hike we went into a very moist, dark, very creepy part of the forest looking for poison dart frogs. It differed from the rest of the forest not only in its light/moisture, but the plants themselves were different.

The trees were not dominant, nor was there much scrub around; it was as if someone planted tens of thousands of shiny leaved houseplants a few feet tall. What trees there were were either covered in moss or had 6 inch long spikes ringed around the periphery. The ground was over a foot thick with large fallen plant leaves. Thus, even though it was so wet, there was no mud around. This area was frequented by several varieties of highly poisonous snakes, which made looking for the poisonous dart frogs all the more menacing.

This first one I am hoping you can tell me...what the heck it is or even related to. As you can see, it has camouflage on it's back (how it made it..who knows...), yet the 'worm' underneath is very flat.

Another odd subject, in its misty, near aqueous environment

Yes, we did find some poison dart frogs on the trip...posting them next week.

Wonderful images. You trip looks wonderful. I was not posting on this forum when you showed the first part of your trip, so you probably mentioned the details of your trip. Can you give a latecomer a bit of an overview?

Hi Ken, the first picture is a larvae of a Tortoise Beetle....Family Chrysomelidae - Leaf Beetles.. Subfamily Cassidinae - Tortoise Beetles. I posted some pictures in the old forums of the local larvae around here in New Hampshire, but they are not clear like your beautiful larvae. That stuff on his back is actually poop and shed skins.

Third picture is another leafhopper (beautiful critter I might add)..notice the rear leg bent forward past the second leg, good indicator of a leafhopper

Danny.
Worry about the image that comes out of the box, rather than the box itself.

Doug,

Thanks for the id...that looks to be it. I didn't think I would ever figure out what this was.

Danny,

Long time no hear. You were my initial inspiration when I got a FZ-20 a couple years ago and followed your posts/websites to get my initial training. Glad to see you back

Ken
