Phlebia in pink

Post by Bruce Williams »

Hi folks,

I think we are looking at Phlebia radiata or P. livida - however identity needs to be confirmed.

Here's an arguably attractive fungus that I found growing on the shady NE side of a large hornbeam that was felled in spring 2005 (it was a lovely specimen tree too?). The main fungus mass measures approximately 180mm top to bottom.

You know those last two look as though they were done with pastels. Really puts a new twist on fungi. Very nice there Bruce. :D

Some beautiful shots Bruce. I think this spring and summer, I will have to look more for things like this to shoot. I notice in the first shot that the fungus looks like it is taking over the leaves on the right hand side of the picture. I wonder if they digest them??

Thanks for your comments guys.

Doug, I've been back to take a closer look and the fungi doesn't appear to actually affect the leaves.

If you're interested I've posted a couple of close-ups of the same fungus growing further alon the trunk.
