Dave,
I appreciate the comments.
When I process my pics, I usually have several pics to choose from that are of near equal quality. Some I may crop tighter than others just because I have the quantities to do so and to experiment with compositions. I do quite often crop the pictures, depending on the composition.
For example, on the grasshoppers, I had another shot:

that is cropped. I did not choose to show that one, because I came across another from later in the trip that I like even better that shows the entirety of the bodies in focus. I chose the one I did since it was unlike the one I will show in the future. I originally cut the picture the way I did to show the whole "lily pad" leaf setup. I was not happy with the background though.
The spider I don't remember for sure why I chose not to crop it tighter. This is a case where I only got one picture from him. Sometimes I won't crop tighter if the image is slightly soft as the cropping further emphasizes the softness. I don't know if this was the case in this pic. I have been experimenting with composition lately and perhaps this was one of my failed attempts. Now that I am looking at it, I do agree that a tighter crop would benefit this pic.
Also, I take the pic in RAW format and save out to jpeg, so the original RAW file never gets changed.
I do appreciate the comments, good or bad.
