A common butterfly here in the North East. A Question Mark- Polygonia interrogationis She is a little ruff around the edges. This website says it is a winter form http://www.nearctica.com/butter/plate16/Pinterro.htm

Pretty butterfly. I'm assuming this was shot recently. If so, then there's a chance you'll be seeing this same butterfly next spring. (The winter forms overwinter as adults.) It'll look really worn then!

I don't know? Are you sure that it is not supposed to look that away, rough around the edges I mean? It is a beautiful butterfly, don't think I have ever had the pleasure of seeing one. Nice job on this Doug, very nice. :D

I have not seen one of these in my yard, but I think this is a great specimen. Looks perfect to me. :D

This picture was taken on 8/8, so we will hopefully see her next year. This one had its` wings open to catch some sun ( I know there is a word for that), When their wings are closed, they look like an old leaf with a small question mark on the wing. See here; http://bugguide.net/node/view/36509
