The Slate Splitter...

Post by crocoite »

About 5 or 6 years ago, I brought back this Slate Splitter from Cumbria in England. He's made from crushed green Honiston Slate, reconstituted with some sort of glue. Head is about 2cm...

He sits on top of one of my mineral display cabinets. I think I need to dust more - check out his furry cap!

I like the textures on the head and around the eyes on the guy. It is amazing at what you don`t see until you process the picture

2 cm is pretty small for such detailed work. Was this statue handcrafted? :D

I think the process is that they pour a mix of crushed slate and glue into a mold and then hand finish it to clean it up.

Hmm...just wondered. Slate is pretty soft, at least the slate in my area, and one could carve it. :)
