Amazon pics part 5

Post by Moebius »

These first two I may have posted under another topic, but thought they deserved another visit in context. It is called a red-spotted hopper and is about 7-8 cm in length. It is one of the most unusual insects I found on the trip.

Those hopper pics are stunning! Out of interest, are the two pics of the same animal Ken?

Bruce,

I would have to check. I saw this creature twice on my travels down there and took pics both times. Don't remember if these are from the same session or not. I will check.

For what it's worth, the pattern of small white dots on the wing appears to be identical in every detail. If these are not the same individual, then the pattern is remarkably constant.

Well, ya maybe...what if they are like...twins or something?

Yeah Rik I think identical spots would hold up in court - and the long, kinked "tail feather" points to it being the same individual too. My original question was prompted by the bright red mask in pic2 - I hadn't attempted to do a make on the wing-spots.

Enjoy your weekend Ken :D

Looks like a squid to me. :| The last one looks to be like some sort of assassin, I think I can make out a rostrum. All are really good and that hopper is an interesting looking creature for sure. One thing that is for sure, I will never probably see one like that around here, though there are some strange bugs in these mountains. Great pics Ken, keep'em coming. :D
