Amazon pics part 3

Post by Moebius »

Here are a few more. The first guy was about 2 cm long and the last two were about 1cm. I can't decide what the 'appendage' hanging down from the 'throat' of the 2nd pic is. If I zoom in on the original on pic #3, I can also see part of it. At first I though it was just a leg from the other side of the insect, but the zoom on the other pic and also analyzing unposted images of this same insect shows that it is not a leg. Anyone have any ideas?

I'd lay odds on piercing mouthparts in a slightly unusual posture & position.

I too would venture to say its a rostrum of sorts, similar to an aphid maybe and by the way Daves comment about it resembling a shrimp in the first image is pretty good. I have never seen a hopper like this, I am assuming this is a hopper right? :D

That is indeed the mouthpart of the insect. It belongs to the order Hemiptera a group in which one of the major define features is the piercing mouthpart.

The second two look like Leaf or tree hoppers and the first one looks like a true bug of some sort, looks like sucking mouthparts also on him. Beautiful pictures Ken
