Lichen on a Tree.

Post by beetleman »

Here is a shot of some lichen I found on a tree...I walk to work and spotted this Lichen and thought it was rather cool looking. They almost look like Tentacle suction cups. The small mustard colored one is rather nice also. No ID so far. :smt017 Field of view is 2"

Looking at the apothecium, the cup or saucer-like fruiting bodies of the lichen, I would venture a guess as it being a Hoary Rosett but there are a couple of others that look similar also. The thallus of the lichen you have here is similar to the Hoary Rosett but then again, there are still a few others that have the same resemblence. Probably the best way to ID the lichen would or might be a spot test or chemical analysis. A good shot of them Doug. :D

This looks like something growing on a coral reef! Amazing what is out there in the macro and micro world that most of us never see.

Nice capture. I have some lichen on the tree in my backyard, but nothing like this. Mine is rather boring in comparison.

Candleflame

Post by Jackie »

The yellow one is a Candleflame - maybe candelaria concolor. It usually grows on the same tree with Star Rosette Physcia stellaris one of the leaf lichens. Lichens are a great indicator of good air quality. A facinating subject for macro photography. Really beautiful. Great photo.

Cheers,
Jackie

Hooray! Maybe we now have someone who is up to snuff on lichens. I have a hard time identifying the little buggers myself. Thanks Jackie. :D

Thanks to everyone for your comments and IDs :smt045 The candelaria concolor would make a good "under the microscope" subject  "WELCOME TO THE FORUM JACKIE"
