Mammillaria supertexta
The newest revision of Helicon seems to have markedly improved haloing and also mush when processed in the mode B. The image of the full plant did not require retouching. In the spine close up, the program had a more difficult time. the spine detail was taken with a 25mm. luminar on a bellow draw of...

Doug, having taken high magnification images of opuntia glochids, I second everything Dave said. The glochid have loosely attached spines that are barbed and have a breakaway design. Once the barb has set, it is nearly impossible to extract the full spine. I have used tapes, coated my fingers with E...

Unknown mammillaria
Ten or so years ago, i got an offset from a club member, a spiny ball 3/4ths of an inch in diameter. It's now about 9 inches tall, has 7 offset heads that sprout mid stem, and remains nameless. The annual grown ring is clearly defined. Both shot were taken hand held with my G9. On the flower close u...

Before I had a dedicated macro lens, I used a Sigma 75-300mm which gave me a magnification of 1:2 at its macro settings With a Canon 500D diopter, I got some very passable results. As Dave said, macro lenses are meant for close focusing and higher magnification. They are well corrected prime lenses ...

Ken, Joan, and Dave, thank you for viewing and commenting. I have in the past eaten the fruits of some mammillarias. In Mexico they eat the fruits of opuntia, known as tunas. Several other cactus berries are also eaten but I am not sure which. But Dave raises a good point. Systemic poisons make nibb...

Mammillaria nivosa
My Mammillaria nivosa has always looked nice, but it never really grew much. This last year, it put out a number of offsets. It is telling me it wants an upgrade from its three inch pot. I love the ripe red berries which I will soon open to see if I seeds set. Hope you enjoy. Irwin http://www.photom...

You are getting some great images from that G9 it seems there Irwin. Never seen one of these before as I can recall. :D Ken, thank you for your kind comments. I approach shooting very differently and can get shots otherwise unavailable by using the G9. I also experiment more. Are you doing black an...
