How many microns focus difference are there between top edge and bottom through the eyepieces? Use the markings on the fine knob to measure This is a very important question. Even on new microscopes, unless the stage has leveling adjustments, some degree of tilt should be expected. If it's only a c...

This is a pretty well known problem with camera lenses coming in from the cold. The recommended procedure is to seal the lenses and bodies in a baggie or other airtight container until the equipment temperature has reached room temperature.

. . . With a counterweight that uses mass (literally, one weight used to oppose another), the moving parts end up weighing twice the mass of the lens, camera and moving stage, and the resulting increase in inertia can be a problem for the motor and other mechanical parts. It helps a little that you...

Re: Counterweights for heavy lenses on vertical rails?

I have some very heavy lenses, some more than 10 kg. This is far above the rated vertical capacities of most motorized rails. One idea I've had is to use a counterweight to balance the weight of the lens, like elevators use. Has anyone tried this? Any advice? I have a Nikon MM40 stand that uses a l...

Maybe an Arca clamp on the tripod head and a compatible plate on the Newport stage. Something like this on the tripod head: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Desmond-DAC-04-Dual-Channel-Arca-Slidefix-Compatible-50mm-Clamp-QR-3-8-w-1-4-/162692594736?hash=item25e13bfc30:g:m0IAAOSwPfZZz~dk and then a rail/plate ...

Would there be any advantage over a stage that has a fine-focus knob for a few degrees, compared to this novoflex panorama plate? Only you can answer that question. If you're trying to move in evenly spaced intervals the Newport stage is marked every degree the Novoflex every 10 degrees. If you're ...

I think this one will do what you want: http://www.ebay.com/itm/KLINGER-MICRO-CONTROLE-NEWPORT-PRECISION-ROTARY-THETA-STAGE-w-MIC-4-3-X4-3-/253173016852?hash=item3af249a914:g:ROQAAOSwmLlX8G3a But I'd advise against a stage with only high precision positioning, unless it's motorized. 180 degrees at 1...

The attachment hole is blocked to the same extent (though I think of it as somewhat restricted) no matter what the function of the screw is. Why not "lock" as one of the possible uses?

Do you have a photo of the other side showing the scale ? Given the 31mm height shown in one of your photos you have either the model 07GOH106 (with #8-32 inch threads) or the 07GOH506 (M4 metric treads). In either case the usable range is specified as +/- 20 degrees. It looks like you've positioned...

According to the catalog: "A thumbscrew on the side may be used to lock the stage". It seems that your goniometers have been modified.

I can't tell for sure but it looks like the plunger has two different faces on the dovetail side. Have you tried rotating it 180 degrees?

Leon, There's a standardized way of calling out areas of the resolution target that make it unnecessary for you to define areas yourself and enable others, even without your instructions, to know the area you're referring to. The convention is to break the markings into groups of 6 line pairs, aka e...

. . . The reason I haven't got Helicon is that you really need to buy the Pro version (to get retouching capabilities) and you have to pay again every year . (That may have changed?). ZS is a one-off payment. Albeit some of the features Helicon has, are rather nice and absent from ZS. It must...
