Cabbage creek doli

My wife and I took an anniversary stroll in the nearby park. We hoped to look for warblers as the spring migration through northern Illinois draws to a close. We struck out on warblers, but as we walked home I noticed some tiny doli flies on the leaves of skunk cabbage growing along the bank of a sm...

This is quite interesting and I reviewed the Wikipedia reference.

I found myself considering the hydrophobic corneal lenses of flies. But worthy of a separate post...

As impressive as the scales are (very nice photo!) the great puzzle to me is the cornea of the eyes. They appear so opaque. Even in freshly collected weevils and many other dark eyed beetles. Fly eyes I can usually see right into. The same with butterfly and moth eyes. And this forum has some remark...

Other ideas? The goose neck specimen holder is probably part of the problem, but the flower stem is probably a greater problem. Simplest solution is to relocate the rig to a less bouncy part of the house. If that is not an option, consider suspending the baseplate from soft bungee cords. Much depen...

First, great photos and interesting subject! Second, what I love about this post in particular, and this community in general is that the seasonal collection of blue mason bee pupae may be discussed as though it was a common every day activity. Like picking apples. Dalantech, you make the fungus gna...

I very much enjoy this thread. Stereo works fine. Shape and arrangement of whitish “corpuscles“ in Rik’s stereo I find as interesting as the balloons in previous threads. A Christmas cactus I brought up from my basement had a hitch hiker stink bug onboard. I smiled as I eyeballed the pits on this tr...

I often see spiders at the lake shore of a local park. They venture into the water as well as scampering along the sand. We are both in pursuit of shore flies but for different purposes.

Lovely work!

LED bulb handy for custom setups

I have been making a time lapse movie of fly larva as they develop inside a small terrarium. The rig’s purpose was to photograph seed germination. The unexpected larval visitors proved to be more interesting. My “two to three week” project has been clicking away for several months now. I recently “u...
