Re: Equisetum telmateia
The two elaters are initially coiled around the spore. The inner part of the elaters is composed of cellulose and the outer part of other polysaccharides. Both parts contract and expand to a different extent when moistened or dried, so the elaters show pronounced hygroscopic movements. When dry, the...

Equisetum telmateia
These spores turned out to be exceedingly hard to photograph with higher magnifications since the elaters (hapters) turn near transparent under higher NA. Commercial slides prove that it must be possible to stain the elaters, but I haven't been able to find a stain that colours them. I made a new at...

Re: Over-perfoming objective, or does darkfield exceed brightfield resolution?
A related aside/rant - the phrase, "gear doesn't matter" is oft-repeated in photography circles and it rather winds me up! I know it's supposed to be a gross simplification, aimed at beginners, but it's frankly pure nonsense. I've given up arguing the point though and just use a stock answer now - ...

Re: Over-perfoming objective, or does darkfield exceed brightfield resolution?
Like you Beats, when using darkfield, I get what looks to be better resolution than with brightfield, and get a similar effect with oblique light. I've read various descriptions of what is going on with some sites basically stating that 'darkfield gives better resolution than brightfield'. Oblique ...

Re: Anfang mit einfachen Mitteln
Hallo OpaKlaus,
Das sind ziemlich schöne Bilder die Sie mit soch ein einfaches Gerät geschaft haben. Das Samen scheint dazu sehr geeignet zu sein. I hab professionelle Arbeite gesehen die doch nicht so gut aussahen.
alles gutes,
Wim

Re: Flash vs Continuous lighting
Am I missing anything? Anybody using continuous lights? Anybody made any lights? Regarding foreground and background, I much prefer to have continuous light at the one and flash on the other. Although it is very well possible to balance the output of either two flashes or two CLs, it's so much easi...

Re: Nikon type 'A' Nosepiece.
Both revolvers I use with my Optiphot have the same feature. The main reason I had for changing from my good old Labophot to the Optiphot was the removable nosepiece, so I could use two different sets of objectives. I seem to remeber having asked around when I bought the second one if the model made...

Cyclosorus parasiticus
Cyclosorus parasiticus (aka Christella or Thelypteris parasitica ) is a rather invasive tropical fern species, now present around the globe. The spores are beautifully shaped and high in contrast. Their true beauty is shown in stereo rep. Beyer2 spores 100x (3DL).jpg Beyer2 spores 100x 3D.jpg

Re: Diatoms from Dutch canals
Hi Mas, Welcome, good to see Amsterdam represented on this forum! I routinely use gelatine drops from a syringe to limit movement and to to keep my subjects as much as they will in the upper layers. Mucus should be avoided too because thicker particles tend to support the cover glass thus limiting p...

Re: Generating stereo series w Zerene
I'll come back to this as soon as I get it again. It happened quite a few times last week, but right now I haven't seen it again. Doing fewer (longer) stacks at the moment.

Generating stereo series w Zerene
I am doing a series of work (the fern spores) for which I now always do want to have stereo pairs and a central pMax. I used to do this sequential, first a conventional pMax stack, followed by changing the prefs to generate a 2-image +/- 1% stereo pair. Now I know I always want all three of them, I ...
