I actually found the little "worm" funny, but I know it's not wanted :-)
Ah! OK then, no worries. I just thought I should mention the beast.

Coloring is the most time consuming part of SEM imaging. :o
This is a lovely image, for sure!

I'm curious about one aspect of the coloring.

Does the person who adds the color learn anything new during the process, or is it strictly a tool for communication with someone else?

Re: some scales

These came out very nice! One small issue: I'm distracted by that dust trail that looks like a dark fiber sticking from front to back, below-left of image center. I don't know any good way to retouch those out of a stereo/rocking sequence, but they can be addressed effectively by building an appropr...

Re: moth fly silhouette

Thanks, guys!

I confess, I'm a little surprised by how nice the silhouette came out.

Re: This 5 pack of 1970-1980s wafers for $40 a suitable test target, or too old/big?

I recently bought one of these: Historic 4" USA made silicon wafer of Microprocessors - From 1986 with case . But I had not done anything with it until tonight. This evening I decided to test several things at once, so I set up to image the wafer with Mitutoyo M Plan Apo 20X NA 0.42 versus my recent...

Re: Unsolvable Focal Abnormalities on an OM-D E-M1X & M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS PRO

I don't see any new revelations in this latest stack. However, in reviewing the stack, I was struck that the difficulty would be more clear if you provided some frames of the same subject, same lighting, same everything, except shot as single exposures instead of focus bracketing. Then it's a matter...

Re: Debunking the high NA / coverslip correction myth

High NA objectives are optimised for a certain coverslip thickness AND for focussing at a certain distance behind it - usually zero. On a scope, as you focus deeper into the mount and further from the underside of the coverslip, spherical aberration kicks in (haze and loss of contrast). Given that ...

Book (2023): "Close-up and Macro Photography" by Lester Lefkowitz

This is to note with pleasure a new pair of books by Lester Lefkowitz. The 5-star rating is totally justified, and I do not say that lightly. I purchased through Amazon and consider the money well spent. Quoting the descriptions at Amazon: Book: The Manual of Close-up and Macro Photography, Volume I...

Re: moth fly silhouette

I had hoped to shoot a higher mag stack for the antenna, but the subject got too fidgety and I had to give up. I tried again later the same day, with more success. This is shot with Mitutoyo 20X NA 0.42 on Canon macro 100mm f/2.8L IS USM on Canon R7 camera, so 10X on APS-C sensor. https://janrik.ne...

Re: moth fly silhouette

The first stereo view is +-2%, with those values determined by inspection from a set of 11 different shifts rendered at resize 25% and stack every 3rd frame. But you prepared that manually, didn't you? Yes. I think of this technique as "old school", because it is what I used to do routinely before ...

Re: Bumblebee stinger

Nice image! There's some good discussion at https://www.reddit.com/r/evolution/comments/vknej8/why_were_bee_stings_being_fatal_selected_for/ . One poster notes that: It's literally only honey bees (Apis) that die once they have stung anything. Every other species of bee does not and can potentially ...

moth fly silhouette

This moth fly appeared in one of my bathroom sinks. It's still winter here, even snowed a couple of days ago, but I suppose this thing grew up someplace in the plumbing system and didn't know or care about the weather outdoors. Anyway, I trapped it in a tiny glass cage made of cover slips, put a dif...

Re: kitchen ant

Thanks for the kudos! I showed your pictures in my fotoclub (on a beamer) but sadly most of the people did not get a stereo view. Have you ever tried to present your 3D work with something like the Loreo Stereo Viewer . And if yes could you share your experience on how to get the prints done? When I...

Re: kitchen ant

More outstanding photographs! The stereos of the mouthparts are a treat and really rock! And you have even managed to capture the "eyelet" in a living specimen! I wonder why the picture of the petiolus in my key doesn't show it, and neither is it mentioned in the text. Thanks! The feature is not di...
