Re: Colorado National Monument

Colorado National Monument is indeed a special place. It is additionally wonderful to me because, circa 20-30 years ago, a friend and I visited in the off-season. A deeply knowledgeable ranger dropped what he was doing and spontaneously offered to walk with us and show us around. He took quite a bit...

Re: CNC Motion Control for Macro Videography

Hi Jay, Though I'm an admin here, I'm just now returning to reviewing other people's posts and posting myself--back from a two-month camping trip with little Internet access (ahhh . . . . :D). I find both this new video of yours--and your prior video, My extra-rigid setup for creating macro videos w...

Re: Nikon Labophot missing part

Andrey, thanks for documenting the approach you devised for transplanting this assembly from one microscope to another. This is useful information to have published here. If I ever need to separate parts Nikon has marked "Ad" for "adhesive," I'll know to start with acetone as a solvent. Meanwhile, I...

Re: Pics of LP Record Grooves

Very cool.

I'm surprised that the grooves, in cross section, appear to have structure that appears stratified. Are LP blanks built up in layers?

No one is going to delete this--it's marvelous. Thanks in particular for identifying the materials used in this basket.

Re: Nikon Labophot missing part

My guess is the compatibility between older first gen Optiphot and the newer Optiphot 2, with the former having the 3-hole piece. However I am not entirely sure about that. This would have been my guess, too. But at least one of my Labophot 2 stands has three screws on top; most of my other Labopho...

These scare me more than bears.
Me too. I've been bitten more often by ticks than bears.

I prefer the diffuse-light version. But as the image appears on my monitor, it might accept a bit more sharpening.

Nice work! :D

Re: Nikon Labophot missing part

Unfortunately I wasn't able to acquire that piece so far. For a while I had detained the search, but now trying to find some time again for this side project. I have just seen your kind suggestion and if it is still in place and you could localize that part laying somewhere without use, that would ...

Re: Nikon Labophot missing part

Hi again, Chris, Do you have a Labophot 2 stage carrier with or without stage? I've just now replied to Pau via PM and email. I think the focus block shown is from the earlier Labophot era, rather than Labophot 2. But I do have carriers to fit either (they are different), and will send Pau whatever...

Was there severe damage to the box?

If not, I hope you are planning to force a return. This is egregious.

Re: Tips for microphotography of specimens in fluid

I wonder why your object wiggle? I can think of two reasons: external vibrations or mixing currents. For small enough subjects, don't forget about Brownian motion. I've seen serious research efforts attempting to hold small particles, within aqueous suspension, in one place against the random "kick...

Re: Concerns Buying Used Mitutoyo M Plan APO 10x

Ryan, The main failure mode I've seen in "bad" Mitutoyo objectives is that they are significantly unsharp. This can be caused by bumping the objective in a way that leaves no mark, but irreparably changes the alignment of some optical element(s). I would expect that somewhere between a third and two...

Re: Equipment and Technique Troubleshooting

Vauratus, welcome to posting! :D And warning--long answer ahead. Having tested a fair number of Mitutoyo objectives, I don't see anything immediately alarming in the results you've posted. (This said, I'm wary of giving a lens a thumbs-up without a direct, side-by-side comparison.) When Mitutoyo len...

Re: exctracting the lenses from Raynox DCR-150

Lothar, this is a very useful post! I've often wondered just what was inside a Raynox DCR-150, and how to take one apart and mount its elements within a lens tube that has more general use. Thanks for doing the fundamental work. :D (I've long wanted--but can't quite justify--a metal lathe. If I'd bo...

Re: Halos when using Mitutoyo 10x - how to solve?

That sounds even better! Do you use a special target or "just" text? Just text, but here are some things I've picked up through trial and error: In Microsoft Word, it's possible to enter a very small font size. For some fonts, this number can be much smaller than the lowest number listed in the dro...
