I like the way the pores actually look like holes instead of raised dots, for a change. Just a brightfield focus stack shot at 100x, then inverted in post. Just guessing, but the only thing that makes sense to me would be an electronic flash, although the lamp doesn't seem to fit.
The only Leitz microscope flash devices I know are based on more conventional speedlites
