Nice! That's very effective at contrasting the thin flat shape of the scales against the globular shape of the amber-colored mystery object.

Re: Sensor size and depth of field
So for the same framing, a crop camera has to be further away than the full frame - with Nikon the crop factor is 1.5 so presumably that means 1.5x further away. And this gives more DOF. Feff increases the closer you get to the subject. So at 1:1, given Feff = Flens(mag+1), then Flens(1+1) = 2xFlen...

Re: some scales
Oh, I assumed it was more or less flat! Is it a spherical ball? If so then I'm reminded of silica gel. I have some larger balls that look exactly like that, but I have never checked to see if there are some small ones in the mix. Maybe a small ball of dried plant resin or nectar? Is it stuck to the ...

Re: some scales
Some exotic weevils have scales that look something like that.
Was this a purchased specimen? If so then it may have gotten contaminated in handling at the supplier.

Re: Sensor size and depth of field
Tony, I hadn't given much thought to the diffraction effects - I need to do some tests to understand the trade off there. I'm guessing it will vary by lens etc. I normally shoot at around f/13 with my Nikon D500 and Nikon 105mm and manage to end up with sharp images, especially after a bit of proces...

Tony, welcome aboard! I'm the fellow who wrote Zerene Stacker, and at this point, I may have studied and written more about DOF than anybody else on the planet. But I've never figured out how to write an explanation that is simultaneously correct, complete, and concise. I won't succeed this time eit...

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens
FotoChris, that's a good point about this lens being closer to f/4 than f/2.8. ... Accurate measurements of their exit pupils would be evidence either for or against this hypothesis. Yes, that would be a very valuable measurement. Remember that for specification purposes, industry convention says t...

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens
I epoxied a Sensei 46mm-43mm step down filter to the front of the lens That may be obvious in retrospect, but it's a good trick that I had not thought of and do not recall hearing mentioned. BTW, I have no hands-on experience with either of these lenses. Still just reading with interest... --Rik

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens
what about CA now? To my eyes, your two images are so similar that I literally had to overlay, register, and flash between, to assure myself that they really were different images. There is still a large amount of reddish fringe compared to the f/4 rendition. In contrast, the AstrHori has nearly id...

The acetone trick has worked well for me, the few times I have used it. That was the way I got the expanded proboscis shown at https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=104190#p104190 . I soaked several in water until one expanded as shown, then gradually swapped in acetone to replace t...

Re: AstrHori 25mm f/2.8 2x-5x full-frame macro lens
Tradeoffs, tradeoffs... Laowa at f/2.8 has a lot of chromatic aberration, mostly gone at f/4, but the AstrHori has no CA wide open. So for some people the relevant comparison is between Laowa f/4 and AstrHori f/2.8. AstrHori is slightly sharper in that comparison -- after levels/curves adjustment to...

Re: ultra macro suggestions beyond 10x -- cheaper but ok objectives to play with? Sony aps-c
I've been playing with my 50x ELWD 0.55 (8.6mm) infinite and 40x BD 0.65 (3mm wd) finite a good bit. I love them both and I'm really grateful to have been shown the ELWD infinite as well, since they serve different purposes and I quite like both of them! I'm planning on short-focusing the infinite ...
