Re: Zerene Performance on the new Macbook Pro

Yes, it's a significant redesign of the original M1. I'm hoping for a new Mac Mini, I will probably throw over to 100% Mac when it comes out - I wasn't expecting so large a performance difference for the model I selected. I'll just need some external storage. A lot of credit to you, too, Rik, for de...

Zerene Performance on the new Macbook Pro

Hi all, a bit of testing - I picked up a new MacBook to replace my 2013 model. I've been itching to replace my desktop (home build), but I've not been able to get the parts. I did a single quick comparison of performance on my desktop vs. the new laptop. I'm just giving summary specs. The PC: AMD Ry...

with a mill, every time you turn around, you need more tooling, which quickly adds up to more than the cost of the mill. Here's hoping that 3D printers aren't as greedy.

--Chris S.
Amen to that. I've probably got 3-4x the money in tooling than I have in my actual machine tools!

Re: What about a 3D printer?

I'm intrigued by the threads. Could you guys expand a bit there? Are you able to print reasonable quality threads? What kind of layer thickness are you using? I'd been thinking about a 3d printer, but assumed I'd have to do the threading on a lathe!

Re: I want to use my Mitties "properly"

The only such head I see on American eBay, currently, is item 402642183481 for $2500 USD OBO. This one strikes me as overpriced, particularly as it lacks a focus block. But if you could get it for a decent offer, provision for focusing movement could be improvised. --Chris S. FWIW, these guys are l...

Beautiful - I turn Delrin and HDPE quite a bit - hadn't thought to see what they'd look like under magnification. I'll have to check it out!

Smithsonian Magazine on Snowflake Photography

An article on snowflake photography in Smithsonian Magazine. Light on technical details - almost everything described is stuff I've done myself, barring cooling my camera and using sapphire slides - I took my pictures out in the cold, so melting wasn't an issue! I suspect there's more to it, just th...

Re: Raynox dcr150 custom tube lens

I am curious about the motivation for custom design & build. Why not just assemble a flocked tube from standard parts, for example as in http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35350 ? --Rik I'm a hobby machinist myself - I've made a few adapters for weird thread combos. I agree with ...

Photo sharing services in 2021

As I continue to shift away from social media, I've started looking into photo services. I'm mainly interested in sharing with friends/family and having a place to link to for full resolution versions. I'm not looking for any services other than hosting. An app would be nice but not necessary. I'm w...

Human error - so easy to screw up!

I change out my setup often, for different magnifications. I was getting unsat results from my latest batch of pictures, so I went back to first principles to figure out what was wrong - cleaning lenses, changing step lengths, etc. Finally I recalculated my extension tube length, and realized I'd le...
