Re: Why "metallic" colours on some insects?

... Also, structural color evolves very quickly and easily, even over the course of just a few generations, involving (at least in some cases) structures that are already present to some degree even in species without conspicuous structural colors. It's just a matter of changing the spacing or thic...

Re: Why "metallic" colours on some insects?

Interesting dicussion. I woul like to add a few comments in addition to Mark's interesting informations. Robber Fly enjoying some Hover Fly juice

Found this Robber Fly sitting on a compost barrel with its prey. I ran for the camera and luckily the lunch continued for a couple of minutes. Focus stack of 48 exposures at f/2.8 and 1/200 sec. Zerene stacker with PMax. No retouching. Handheld, natural light. Rovflue_m_Svirreflue_kompost_07aug21_PM...

Re: Why "metallic" colours on some insects?

It is important not to be eaten. But surviving is of little advantage if you are unable to mate because you cant find a partner. Mammals and a lot of moths locate partners by the smell from long distances. Birds use their voices and bright colors too. They can recognize color patterns from a long di...

Re: My local dragonflies

I have now taken my time to sort and edit the rest of the (600+) pictures from that nice day. Here is a follow up to my first picture of the egglaying Redeyed Damselfly from a few days ago. Placing her eggs furter down on the plant stem the female slowly moved deeper down into the water and the male...
