Desmids and Diatoms

In a sessdion a few days ago I found desmids in close proximity to diatoms and thought they were interesting scale indicators.

Yes. that is a diatom. I tried to dislodge it from the Micrasterias by tapping the cover glass with a needle, but it wouldn't budge. However, the diatom is a very good scale indicator, as will be seen in my post Desmids and Diatoms.

This wasp has been boring holes in the ends of firewood logs outside our front door, leaving quiteb a pile of sawdust.
