Thanks, Rick. This is a good place to start and it looks promising. I'll report back if I make progress and test anything in the field.

AUTOMATED field lens focus stacking - anyone know how?

The key is automated. Camera on a tripod, no wind, get some separation of the subject from the background and shoot around f5.6 - 7.1. I can do this by hand but with more open apertures it gets very tricky to avoid gaps. Does anyone know if there is an app to be able to control lens focus to allow s...

Thank you, Mike. I'm going to look into your suggestion.

What about using the Nikon 4x infinite objective mounted on the front of my 200mm macro lens.....or are you thinking your Raynox setup would produce sharper images?

Thank you Charles. I'm quickly coming to the conclusion a 4x infinite on a 105mm macro is not a good idea. I do get 4x but I set the lens focus point on the closest focus. That eliminates the vignetting but probably causes other problems that Rik has raised. I've now moved to putting the 4x on my 20...

Okay, I have abandoned using the 4x objective on the 105mm macro. Just not right. I sleep better at night.

After moving it to my 200mm macro everything appears to work fine. No vignetting and able to focus on infinity and nice and sharp. Thank you all very much.

Hi Charles - I'm using a Nikon CFI BE Plan Achromat Infinite Objective 4X (NI-MA-CFIBE-MRN70040) attached to the front of my AF-S VR Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF. I get vignetting when focusing at infinity but when I focus to the closest distance there is no vignetting and the magnification is ex...

Thanks, Chris. Very interesting. Can you send a picture of your brass tubes? If air is the culprit what about clamping the stem, then cutting it below the clamp. I'm thinking that an uncut stem is not actively sucking water up from below....especially when the soil is not moist. If we can mimic a sy...

Okay, thanks. I'll look at that. I think I originally did it because of extreme vignetting but I didn't get sharp images so I went back to using the other objective on a bellows. I think the problem was using the 10x on the 105mm. I've got it on my 200mm now and I'm getting 10x. I'll run more tests ...

Wow, Rik. You are the first person to suggest I'm not crazy to think it's a pressure thing. Seems logical.....now I'm going to get more serious about testing it. I'll try your water balloon idea, I'll try a string or rubber band tourniquet and anything else that might fool the plant in thinking it s...

Thank you both very much for taking the time to respond. This is very helpful for me.....I'm going back to do more testing. Thanks again for a great website. I have two 10x objectives, an infinite and a finite. I've found I get better (sharper results) when I use the finite on my bellows rather than...

Yes, all good points. Picking, wilting, shooting, wilting is a quick and easy approach but difficult for the flowers that wilt quickly. I have asked the experts at the Wildflower Center if I could do something to delay wilting - like tying a tourniquet around the step before cutting it....but they d...

Yes, good call. It seems all mallows are quick to droop. The stems and petals seem to droop faster than the reproductive structures. I cut it, walked about 50 steps to my studio, clamped it and shot it. Because I knew I was going to shoot at 4x I clamped it in there very tightly so it didn't wilt en...

nikon 105mm macro plus 68mm of extension tubes question

Nikon 105mm macro plus 68mm of ext tubes. So with this this lens and extension tube combination with the lens focused at its nominal focus I get this: lens to subject distance = 110mm viewing frame= 18x12mm magnification value = 1.99 or 2:1 or 2x When I set the lens focus on infinity and look at a m...
