Shooting 2-3' from the sensor using the 105 macro at f5.6. I didn't test anything at a magnification lower than 1:4 which put the subject 17.5" from the front of the lens. The values from my data table in an earlier post suggest the step values move from lower values to higher values as you increase...

D850 in-camera Focus Shift feature

I ran about 95 tests to see how this feature might work for macro/close up because Nikon provided no useful information. The variables are magnification, f-stop and step value. Here is my summary table for values that provided a 20-50% overlap in a focus stack series. I thought it would be linear an...

Oh, I thought of another reason where not returning the focus to the original setting would be an advantage. If you wanted to add a frame at a higher f-stop to feather the background focus transition. For example, if you shot a macro stack at f7.1 at the end you could shoot one frame at f16 and then...

I think I mispoke/miswrote. I really meant overlap of 25-50%. When I wrote it I meant the next step frame should move 50-75% into the next frame. Or maybe narrow the step overlap to 20-30%? I also wanted to say, this is preliminary. but I'm seeing a few values that are out of line....hiccups or the ...

Nikon D850 Focus Shift step data.....pls help

I do close-up and macro focus stacking using Stackshot and in the field doing manual lens focus stacks and also controlled by Control My Nikon on a tablet tethered to my D800. I just bought a D850 for a few reasons including it's "focus shift" feature to do in-camera lens automated focus stacking. S...

Yeah!! but....cables and a tablet and I have to put on my glasses and I had to get a special stylist because the software on the tablet doesn't expand so you have to push buttons that are microscopic.... it would be a pleasure to do focus stacking in the field with the camera controlling everything....

Why can't Nikon D850 drive a Nikon 200mm macro

I can hook a tablet to my D800 and use Control My Nikon to automatically drive a focus stack using the Nikon 200mm macro. So why couldn't nikon just build that feature into the camera firmware? Just input step size and how many shots you want the camera to take. I would think it would be pretty simp...

Okay, I've got it working. I completed the first field test today after developing a process in my studio. I've using the following: Nikon D800, 105mm macro, tripod, HP Stream 7 tablet and USB connected to the D800. The visible frame size is 2x3" so a mag of ~1:2 (0.47). So this is field open apertu...

I ordered the HP Windows tablet so I will report back when I've run tests. I'm not getting feedback from Control My Nikon so I don't know if the tablet will run their software. I downloaded Helicon Remote and I'll report back on running tests on the HP tablet. The tests on my desktop worked well. I ...

I found this: HP Stream 7 Tablet 32 GB Windows 8.1 Signature Edition, Black for $129 and it runs windows and has a USB port. If I can run ControlMyNikon on this that might be the simplest solution for me with my Nikon D800, 200mm macro and I already own ControlMyNikon. It should get simpler to do th...

Okay, maybe the best interim solution is for me to get a mini computer that would run Helicon Remote or ControlMyNikon in the field. Does anyone know of a conveniently small and light computer that runs Windows and would allow me to load either of these software solutions? That might be my least exp...

Thanks, Lou! I've been saying for a while that camera manufacturers could do this now if there was a market for it. So I'm glad to see Olympus is the first. I think it's funny that cameras have tens of features I have no use for but I wish they just had a few I would want. This is one of them. I can...

My challenge has been to shoot field macro stacks with open f-stops, like 5.6, 6.3, 7.1. This produces great Bokeh but the challenge when shooting close to 1:1 to 1:2 is being able to create a 3-10 frame stack using such fine motor (finger) control to move the lens. A more precise solution would be ...

I'm looking for a lens focus stacking method rather than a software solution - that would be way too labor intensive for my application - plus I really do hate making selections in Ps. I do understand your solution but it wouldn't work for me and what I'm trying to do. I'm looking for precise focus ...
