Trifoliate Maples

I'm a big fan of these small maples native to Asia though some are difficult to find in the states as they have very low seed viability. Here are some shots from two I have in the yard. Acer mandshuricum (Manchurian maple) 200 AF micro f5.6 stack of 3 http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/96...

Here is another example using the Apo-Componon reversed and stacked. This is Pachyrrhynchus regius boronoganus at maximum bellows extension (~200mm) f5.6 around 5X and a crop at 66%. I think the modified scales present a lighting problem that I have yet to fully manage. You can see distinct detail i...

Chris, Serial number is 14568732 and yes, the lens was reversed. There may be some diffraction but more likely I did not take enough steps on this stack. Here is a 112% crop of the spots you are referring to. I may come back to this weevil to try wide open, I have normally been using this lens at hi...

Pachyrrhynchus amabilis & 45/4

Playing around with a 45/4 Apo-Componon obtained from a forum member. This is one nice piece of glass. This weevil shot at about 3X at f5.6 stack of about 60.

Using the tip on the light tent, this gives a bit more of the true colors of this weevil.

Rik, Yes, all these are in small depressions (I have forgotten the exact term and am too lazy to dig out my entomological dictionary!). I will try to do some others at an angle where this is more easily seen. I had the 28 stopped down to f11, probably too far and will need to do some tests on it, I ...

Rik, Here is about 6x of P. gloriosus with the reversed 28/3.5. I'm not thrilled as I believe I have exceeded my tripod stability and bellows focus rack capability. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/961_LR_P_gloriosus_6x_ZS_PMax_1.jpg I also was working on another weevil, Pachyrrhunchus ...

Rik, I've got a 28/3.5 I can reverse, a 45/4 Apo-Componon and a 55/3.5 Micro headed this way over the next week. Let me see what I can do, my stacking movement is limited by trying to manage slight turns on the bellows rail. I think a Velmex unislide will help! I really tried to capture the burgundy...

Philippine Curculionid

More experimentation with Zerene and stacking. This is Pachyrrynchus gloriosus from The Philippines with a reversed 60 2.8 f8 polarized lens and flashes stack of 50. Still need work but making some progress. http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/961_PachyrrhynchusgloriosusZSPMax_1.jpg Scott

Thanks Rik, I'll check the stacking on the first. I do remember that I did not adjust the contrast on either image.

Great input!

Chrysochroa b. rugicollis Learning Curve

First efforts with Zerene Stacker. Both are DMap versions. First is about 1X with a 200 f4 micro f8 stack of 12. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/c_b_rugicollis_l_ZS_DMap_resize.jpg This is about 2X with a 60 f2.8 micro f8 normal orientation on a bellows, stack of 30. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/...

Interesting, the ant either thought the wasp was Aunt Sadie or was so absorbed in lunch to pay any attention.

Nice captures.

Hi BAT, I'm with you on the aperture/exposure challenge with the D90. At least in the digital world test exposures and review of the histogram is much quicker than having to wait until the film is processed to see if your bracketing worked!! I made the decision to spend money on good glass and then ...
