What an absolutely fantastic creature & capture, Ken. I love caterpillars and have always hoped to encounter one of these beasts. I'm certainly envious. And to even spot it while strolling around on your lunch break...such luck.

Ken - I could be mistaken, but I believe these are the homes of the Potter Wasp.

Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate this, Sven. It really is a cool effect. I will be trying it myself. :)

Sven - Thanks a ton for the info. Your English is just fine. I intended to do this procedure and have a reworked image the next day to share, but I have been too busy to get to it yet. Anyway, thanks again. :)

Thanks a lot everyone. :) Your comments are really appreciated. Sven - the color key image is a really interesting idea. I have never done this, but would like to try it. Using photoshop is there a simple way to do it or would it involve complex masking of the beetle?

What an awesome compostion, Nikola. The colors in the background are beautiful, the mating hemiptera (they look like stink bugs) a rare find, and the seed pod is just cool. A very well balanced & interesting shot in my opinion. :)

Very cool, Ken. I particularly like #1 & #2. It would be cool to see the whole tail as mentioned above, but it's a really nice composition, otherwise. I like the way the background shows a combination of grasses, flowers, ground, etc. too. :)

Nice shots, Doug. As a fellow tiger beetle stalker I can only imagine you slowly sneaking up on him saying to yourself, "Please, please, please just stay there a few more seconds...." They are always an exciting find. :)

:) No prob, Paul, you are not a pain at all and just to be clear I'm not trying to rhyme here. I just checked again, specifically on the first one and I believe I took off 1/4 to 1/3 to obtain the resulting image retaining about 66% to 75% of the original. Ok, that was a guess just eyeballing...

:D Thanks a lot everyone. Paul - I would guess these to be cropped about 25%, but I'm not exactly certain. I looked at the originals and that seems about right. Rik - you sure have the analytical eye. These were taken in the early afternoon on sunny days so you are right about the light from the env...

:D Thanks Bruce. I struggle with the wing reflection problem. I haven't been able to get the results I want with natural light, but I can't seem to diffuse the light enough (yet) with the flash to avoid that reflection. Any suggestions?
