Carabid Disaster
Last night's disaster. Practicing diffusion on shiny black beetle. Carabid at 2.5x. Originally 29 steps (two flash misfires way over exposed two frames apart with 3 Canon 580 EX II'cs, ended with 27) with fresh batteries all around and forgot to mirror lockup. Carabid 2.5x 27 steps 180µm copy 1024.j...

Re: Weevil
To my eyes, side view black, front view white, top view black. Totally subjective and unscientific. Nice pix either way.

Bee Eating Honey
Not a great image but... a bee (yet to be identified) eating honey at 4x. Nuthin' to eat outside so I brought it in for some photographs and a dollop of honey. Single shot with a Canon 1Dx and MPE-65mm at 4x and in the diffraction range of f16.

Ant Face Texture
Nuthin' special. Warmed up today, ants came out and I caught this one. Specimen head width just a smidgeon under 1 mm. Canon 30D, Sigma 70-300 @ 250mm with Zeiss 10x infinity microscope objective giving about 10x. 101 steps at 10µm.

A Day With Banasa Stink Bugs
Ah, it is currently snowing, so... last June I spent an afternoon with some Banasa stink bugs. This one was enjoying a plant outside. Seven image hand stack. Banasa stink bug 7 step hand stack copy 1024.jpg For the entomologists, an obligatory dorsal view, sans distracting background (single shot, l...

Re: 25µm Vrs 10µm
This should be the best solution optically in principle, though with lower mag/na lenses only experimentation will answer that question definitively. I did a test with the Sigma 70-300mm last night. It came within smidgens inside the three lines for denoting 2mm on a ruler at the 300mm lens setting...

Re: 25µm Vrs 10µm
Whew, problem solved! I was rummaging through my "macro closet" and found an old Sigma 70-300mm lens, long forgotten. I did have to use 12mm worth of step up/down rings to attach the objective. So, in theory with the Zeiss 10x working out to 8x on the 200mm, 10x at 250, then it should be 12x at 300m...

The Unknown Microscope
This is the microscope I got for $100. The turret can hold five objectives (only came with four) Zeiss Jena Planachromat + 10x/0.20 ∞/-A, Zeiss Jena GF-Planachromat 40x/0.65 ∞/0.17-A, Zeiss Jena GF-Planachromat HI 50x/1.0 ∞/0-A and Zeiss Jena Planachromat HI 100x/1.30 ∞/0-A. It is not a microscope I...

Re: 25µm Vrs 10µm
The differences will be most evident when pixel-peeping. I suggest to show us an actual-pixels crop of areas containing fine details. The eyes and those antennae that show long hairs would be good areas. --Rik I can do the crops when I get time tomorrow. Thanx for some education. There is a little ...

25µm Vrs 10µm
It snowed last night so... I did a test this afternoon with a Canon 30D and Zeiss 10x on a 55-200mm lens. The specimen is a lacewing face. First image is 34 steps at 25µm.The second image is101 steps at 10µm. I personally do not see a major difference though the 101 step image has a very slight smid...

Re: Lygus
OK, so they belong to the CF 250 series, full corrected planachromats designed for 250mm tube lens. Likely this isn't a stereo microscope, BTW I have no clue, no name plate on microscope. German plates on back, made in GDR. I gather then it is a "stereo" mono via mirrors for the eye pieces? I just ...
