Thanks, Ray, for the idler rail suggestion. That will be a definite improvement.
For up to 5x, a 1 second delay has given me good results (unless a truck drives by the house). For 10x I think the idler rail becomes really important.

T-Rex Photomacrography Stand
I built a stand using components from 8020.net I use it for macro as well as for photomacrography. t-rex-stand.jpg I was inspired in part by Mike's (mawyatt) WeMacro Stand on Steroids: https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=40934&p=271036&hilit=wemacro+stand#p271036 But I was st...

Re: Restacking (ie, stacking stacks)
Well, it's observable when I pixel peep. I'm assuming it's vibration; only some shots in a stack show slight blur - so each stack is likely to have different slices blurred. I'm pretty conservative on the focus increments. I have a heavy table and a setup of about 15 lbs of aluminum (t-slot and brac...

Restacking (ie, stacking stacks)
Once I get my settings right, I often shoot several identical stacks. Then I compare the output from my stacks, and keep the best. However, I've noticed that sometimes one stack will be the sharpest in one area, and another stack will be the sharpest in another area. Out of curiosity I tried stackin...

Re: Thorlabs SM2 tubes flocking? (+ other question)
Just an FYI on the Doodlebug Beetle Black Crushed Velvet Scrapbook Paper. Scrapbook.com has the paper cheaper including shipping Thanks for the info folks Thanks for the source, John. The Doodlebug Beetle Black gave me the best results. I use a black sharpie to darken the white edges of pieces. I s...

Re: Mirrorless tethered stacking?
Duke - Thanks for sharing your experience. I think I'm going to recommend a DSLR given the software setup will be simpler. I might suggest a Nikon D810 if they are okay with buying off ebay. Higher res, and Nikon started counterbalancing the shutter with that model, and supposedly that further reduc...

Re: Mirrorless tethered stacking?
Zed - Thanks for the helpful reply. So far I've only gone up to 10x, but vibration hasn't been an issue using EFCS with mirror-up. The labs probably would go up to 10x, possibly 20x. Interesting solution you propose. I think I'd be happy with it, and would appreciate the degree of control Zerene pro...

Mirrorless tethered stacking?
I'm helping friends at a science lab select equipment. They'll shoot tethered for meso/macro/micro. I'm inclined to recommend Canon 6D II / WeMacro / Helicon Remote. Given the days of DSLRs are numbered, I'm wondering if people have found any great solutions using a Canon or Nikon mirrorless. I've n...

Re: Honey bee eye
Thanks for the kind words, Rik. In the case of the honey bee, the eye hairs are spaced at a distance that is about the size of dandelion pollen grains - probably not coincidental. I lit strongly from one side, with a weaker fill light on the other side (or maybe just white card stock to bounce in th...

Re: Honey bee eye
Doing this would be like a dream job for me, btw. Mark - It is truly wonderful because of the fascinating subject matter, feeling like my work matters, and working with great people who are knowledgeable and dedicated. The catch? I can afford to do this because I'm retired. The projects are often d...

Honey bee eye
I work with museums to create imagery for exhibitions. I'm currently starting on a project illustrating insect morphology as it relates to insects' behaviors and environments. I post-process the photos to give them the look of lithographic prints. The goal is to engage the public, and illustrate spe...
