Thanks everyone. It was really fascinating to watch - right place at the right time. The thing is I've seen leaves hanging from a single strand of web lots of times this summer and I've always thought they have just been randomly caught by the web. Now and I know better :D

The Hanging Fly

I watched an orb spider waft across on the breeze from the side of our roof to a large bush and attach one very strong thick strand of web from roof to bush. It then went across to the middle of the single strand and dropped down until it reached the ground (about 7 feet). The dead fly was lying on ...

Thanks Brian and Peter :D I was browsing around my garden and saw this one flying around flowers with the bees. We get heaps of the little hoverflies but this one was the same size as a bee, so my eyes nearly popped out  Now that you have told me, I recognise the pattern on the back which is ...

New Bee to Me

Can someone please tell me what sort of bee this is. I've never seen one like it before. Actually it may not even be a bee but better be benign.

Here I Stand and Gazania

Dropping by to say hello- been away for a while. This little fellow measured 4 mm in length and I took quite a few photos before he moved and I realised I was taking photos of his rear end. The flower is a geranium petal. The second one is a gazania in the final stages of being rather beautiful. Hop...

Thanks for that Chris!! Ouch!!!! Now that would hurt. What a fascinating part of history. Maybe they should have had a shot of scotch afterwards to take away the pain and numb the senses after being defeated :D

Wonderful photos Brian !! These look like some strange bees. I We get the little hoverflies in summer but they are much smaller than these guys. These ones look quite fat compared with the ones I see here.
Cheers :D

Well......I've just scrolled through this topic Tesselator and will honestly admit nearly all of it went straight over my head. But I will say I love the second butterfly on the first page but my favourite is the bee with the pollen sticking to it :D

Thistle

A thistle taken in the last throes of summer. I don't know anything about thistles and I'm not sure if this is a Scotch thistle. I just know they are rather beautiful in their own way but downright ugly when they're dead. It's more of an abstract sort of photo :D http://www.photomacrography.net/foru...

Beautiful butterfly John. These are the main ones we see here down south during summer (I can't quite remember what it feels like to be warm  )but hopefully summer is on its way back. We also get a lot of small grey and white butterflies but I don't know what they're called. They absolutely l...

Hi Ken, thanks, Just a bit of fun during a very dreary weary winter.

Hey John, good spotting!! I noticed you joined a short time ago - this is a great site and I really enjoy it and I'm sure you will too. I look forward to seeing your posts :D

Just wanted to say ....

http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/userpix/734_Hello_1.jpg Haven't contributed anything for a while (in the depths of winter here and so prefer to stay inside and cosy), so just wanted to say what the wall says. I spotted this while walking through a suburban street and it just took my fancy :D ...
