No idea abouut the specs of the A710 (without a trip to dpreview) ... but, judging by these pics, it's doing a good job in your hands, Rik :)

#1'd get my vote - fwiw - more oof bg, bigger subject, comp / pose - any chance of seeing the technicals on this, please?

Thanks, Charlie for taking the time to post details etc. It reminded me of something similar I tried before making the macro arm that I use now - still with a 550ex too. << One "downside" is that they are expensive >> Indeed - Have been tempted, but have resisted - and the 550 is fine for std photos...
