It is also my understanding that zeiss microscopes did some of the chromatic aberration correction in the eyepiece. It was my hope that this would be longitudinal and would stack out. I haven't found any more technical descriptions of this. I don't know if this is a large part of my issue.

I thought that also, the image circle fills the sensor (35mm) albeit with quite a lot of vignetting. But the image quality isn't great even in the dead centre.
