Busy bee

Was trying out a new macro lighting setup and managed to catch this one.

Great shot of a bee in flight, what patience you must have to be (!) focusing in the right place! Well done

Nice images, although I prefer the second one. I would be tempted to crop the image to just around the cream coloured outline, that would give you a very nice geometric but not symetrical patterm.

One for the IT geeks (including me!)

I've been really getting into the macro side of things, and looking for things that I can set up and photograph. This one is an old hard drive that I took the cover off, and the mechanical structure is the arm that reads the data from the disk. Actually there are two disks and two arms in the image,...

Thanks to you all for your responses, I can see I have a bit to learn! I had heard of capturing insects and cooling them in the fridge for a while to make them more sluggish, but then the question would be how long would they take to revive in a studio (and how do I get rid of them if they suddenly ...

Advice on getting the animal subject to sit still!

I'm relatively new to macro photography, and most of my subjects to date have been inanimate objects or bugs and flies that I've chased around the garden. So how do these wonderful images of flies come about? What keeps the subject in one place long enough to allow single (or stacked) images to be t...

Rat bones

Perhaps not the most enticing of subjects, but while clearing out an area of the garden I came across a rat skeleton. The first image is a set of neck bones, the second the front gnawing teeth and nasal passages (I know, the depth of field isn't very good). I deliberately didn't clean it up, it seem...

Thanks for the feedback, the second hand on a mechanical fob watch in this case is a "sweep" hand which moves in smaller than one second increments. With a long exposure time I reckon that is three increments that are shown.

The lights in this case were indeed above the object.

Cheers

Nice image, I love the contrast between the background colour and the item being captured. A nice bit of detail in the small hairs on the inside of the spiral, and once your eye follows the spiral ever inwards there's the last little bit that tries to break free.

Good image, well done

Time flies...

I'm new here so be nice..... I've finished setting up my macro-table-on-the-cheap as an experiment and have been looking for subjects to play with. This one turned out not bad, with a couple of desk lamps as illumination the exposure had to be longer (about a second, hence the blurred second hand). ...

Excellent images, I can never find a dragon fly that will sit never mind get shots like these. How did you manage to catch them on the ground?

Well done

Thanks for the responses, ChrisR - Thanks for fixing my issue with the image, I'm still learning the nuances of the forum! I don't believe the bee was sleeping, just taking a rest. With this setup I have about 10 cm (4 inches) between the last piece of glass and the subject, with the full rig on the...
