Slime molds and highway layouts!

Hi strangers! I ran across this article and thought it would be of interest to some of the folks here, I know we've had some great slime mold pics in the past (boy does that sound like a weird thing to say!). http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/nstv/2010/11/slime-mould-takes-over-mexican-highway-syste...

"Cell phone microscope" for $10

Hi guys! Sorry I haven't been around here much lately, been distracted by the flashing lights of consumer electronics rather than photography. But I'm going to Oregon next month, and will be taking my DSLR along, so there is still hope..... What made me think of dropping back in here was this articl...

Free Scanning Electron Microscope of your sample

http://www.aspexcorp.com/resources/send_sample.html I admit that I haven't (yet) done it myself, but apparently Aspex Corp. is a manufacturer of these things, and they are offering to do photographs of any samples sent in. Unfortunately, you don't get to play with the SEM yourself! If anyone gets a ...

Near the top of the above page is a photo of a fashion photographer shooting with a 600mm lens and using a walkie-talkie to communicate with the model!

Oddly enough, I just ordered one of these from Amazon.com on Tuesday night! They cut the price of the US version significantly, though it is still quite pricey. As mentioned in the article, they now have an international version being released which should be available in the UK and much of the rest...

Macro photos with a cell phone camera! (serious)

I haven't tried the above trick, but it seems sensible enough that it would work. If I try it, I'll post some results here!

Wow! Yep, that's impressive. Huge thing, and he's a better (or dumber) man than me to get near a thing that could push him down at about 1500 feet per minute!

I assume the photos were taken from a chopper or fixed wing plane, and not another hang glider!

I have never owned a major brand 100mm macro, but the near-unanimous opinion seems to be that the Canon/Tamron/Sigma lenses in the 90-105mm range are all very good. I understand that the Tamron has a few different (which doesn't necessarily mean better or worse) quirks because of the lens design not...

How do you feel about tapeworms? Actually, tapeworms don't bother me much.....Probably mainly because I've known about 'em for decades and had time to get used to the idea. Years ago, I read a memoir of a parasitologist physician that fascinated me, and included a description of a middle-aged milli...

The fact that we're surprised to see this sort of selectivity implies that it is uncommon. Compare this to Wikipedia's statement that "One study concludes that more than 16% of neotropical insect species carry this bacterium." It seems that the magic combination of a) and b) is pretty rare. What?! ...

I believe some of the earlier interplanetary reconnaissance probes used this same method to generate color images with 1960s-era digital cameras. I can't find a really good reference with a quick google, but this at least makes reference to it: http://www.archive.org/stream/marinerpicture00coll/mari...

I certainly wouldn't care for this, though if you were a male who was somehow resistant, the social life could be fun for awhile!

I spent some time on this, the place where I was most easily hit over the head with the "answer" was actually in the Wikipedia article on intragenomic conflict....Do I understand that the reason for doing away with males is that males are useless to the Wolbachia infection for reproduction, so Wolba...

I wonder what advantage their is to the infection agent in targeting males? I wonder if it is truly exclusive to males, or just mostly infects males for some reason?
