Re: WTB Olympus Dissecting/Stereo Microscope
FWIW, I've had an AmScope 15x zoom on a (large) boom since 2017 or so. $500 or thereabouts new. I love it, actually. Really a very competent machine. It's not Leitz optics or anything, but for me it's a tool for working on stuff, not for imaging or admiring stuff. It sits on a dedicated table with a...

BH2 UNP Diameter
If you happen to have a BH2 DIC system and have a spare moment, could someone let me know the exact diameter (and width if it's readily measurable) of the BH2 UNP DIC prism inserts? Thanks!

Re: update: my yard has BSF's again this year
Rik - Thanks a lot for posting to this, I hadn't seen it before and it's fascinating. I got to the end and was wondering if there have been any studies as to what insects the BSF may be pushing out as its range spreads? And it really is surprisingly wasp-like in appearance - which seems like the kin...

A single Nomarski prism acts (I think) as about a 1/16 wavelength retarder plate. Using just one Nomarski prism and rotating your polarizers to suit can be useful for giving a slight birefringence effect without too-radically altering the apparent colors of your sample. Here for example is a picture...

Re: Spiders (especially jumping spiders) are much smarter than you think
"Are they mainly automatons playing out a fixed action plan of behaviors? Or are they also thinking about what they are doing?" I don't know, but I strongly suspect the answer is in some ways "both." A British naturalist and fellow of the Linnean society named Benjamin T. Lowne performed a very inte...

Hi Rik. Yes, you are almost certainly right. Duh. Alizarin excitation is green, emission red. I'll check it tomorrow to be sure.

Re: Inside a rosehip
Amazing images as always by Charles! I'm pretty sure fine brittle plant hairs like these have silica walls like the stinging hairs on nettles. I haven't heard of gypsum, calcium sulfate, deposits in plant cell walls. I have a scanning electron microscope at work with an energy dispersive spectromet...

Re: Inside a rosehip
The hairs themselves are quite interesting, and seemingly have either a central channel or (as I think) they are folded around to form a kind of spiked tube, sort of like a blade of grass. The five-sided folicular organ at the base of the hairs and the structure of the hairs where they emerge from t...
