Re: Carabid Disaster
I mainly see some double imaging. Does not doing mirror lockup cause that much effect? I have thought that not locking up the mirror was not that big a deal, when rapidly focus bracketing thru a live subject, but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: knot of striped hair
Very good. I was wondering if flattened hair strands are also curly.

Re: Hope you like bug pictures!
Très intéressant ! J'ai souvent observé les entonnoirs de fourmillon chez moi et vu des larves mais j'ignorais ce que pouvait être un adulte. J'ai appris quelque chose ! Je mourrai moins bête. Merci ! Merci! Désolé, c'est peut-être une mauvaise traduction. Les adultes fourmis-lions ne vivent pas lo...

A gentleman spider
From last summer, here are male and female jumping spiders ( Phidippus clarus ). The male is in plain view, while the female is seen only as a vague outline in her silken retreat. According to BugGuide, females of this species are frequently seen hanging out at the top of plants like this. The male,...

Re: Mantis eye cleaning
That is rather fascinating. I certainly did not know about the brush!
Update: I'm sure I see it in one of my pictures of a Chinese mantis as well.

Of course one must consider the age and resultant sharpness of the rotary heads. While razors are replaced fairly regularly.

A little murder
I was in the woods one day when I came across this striped leaf beetle ( Dirospidae sp.). I was gauging how to maybe photograph the beetle, when a predatory stink bug nymph suddenly ran up from behind and impaled it! Certain stink bugs are predatory, and I have seen them with dispatched prey that ar...

Re: My tests of Laowa 100 mm f/2.8 2x and Laowa 25 mm f/2.8 2.5-5x
I already own the Canon EF 24-105mm zoom f/4 L Macro IS USM Lens but I am debating purchasing the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens for the 2x Macro. I want to have better clarity, resolution and of course magnification. Will the $500 price of the Laowa give me those? I shoot a lot of macro. I'm sure yo...

Re: Adjusting ‘Z’ in the Field
I do have an extremely cheap and flimsy tripod that I occasionally still use with a z-axis gear. It does the trick but its very clunky. For studio work, I usually control that axis by piling books, magazines, and paper until I get the precise height I need for either the camera or the subject. The x...
