Two wrongs can make a right

A week or two ago there was some discussion on the forum about using layer blending modes to improve images. Here I want to show one way to do it. Here are 100% crops of three images. The first and second are very ugly DMap and PMax stacks of the same wafer images. They show low contrast and lots of...

Re: Lens Tests Coming Soon

I'd also be interested to hear about it if it doesn't amount to much - always useful to hear what does and doesn't work. Dick, it has worked extremely well. -150mm Oly f/2.0 Four Thirds lens + 400mm Nikon f/5.6 ED IF lens. I'll post it shortly. Not cheap, but it illustrates what I think is a genera...

Re: Lens Tests Coming Soon

About the Sigma art 70mm, I have tried that with extension rings to get some higher magnification, but the result is not very good. The image will still be very sharp in the middle, but a large part of the image (in full format) will be severly blurry. For modern floating-element lenses, you should...

Bdelloid rotifer males may exist

I have seen many great photos here of bdelloid rotifers. The website "Why Evolution is True" by Jerry Coyne has highlighted two new genetic articles arguing that these famously parthenogenetic animals are probably sneaking sex now and then, at least one time per hundred generations, even though no o...

Re: Personal parasite.

Wow, very impressive that you were able to get it off of you with the mouthparts intact. Nice photo too!

Yes, really interesting comparison, and fantastic results even if you had only posted one of them. I'll probably be alone in this opinion but I find that I like the simple first one the best.

Glad to hear they are ok. I apologize for raising a red flag.

Thanks Adalbert. What is a control layer? Is that like a Layer mask?

Re: High key contrast method (post-processing tip)

The key difference is that B&W conversion allows you to adjust the contribution of individual hues to brightness in (what becomes) the luminance channel.
I think that is right, it's the main reason why here are special B+W conversion operators in addition to a simple Convert to Grayscale command

Can you give more explanation about your technique? I think this would be helpful for my scientific work....Thanks in advance.

Mark, for the vaccines that require deep freezing during transport, I think there would be some chance that these conditions were violated at some point. Certainly here in Ecuador I would be very eager to see if I really got a good-quality dose of the vaccine.

Excellent conversions! They remind me of artists' ink drawings, or of prints from old entomology manuals.

Re: Pixel shift vs no shift example

Doing deep stacks, insects and the like, without telecentric lenses, just seems doomed to parallax hell in my view. When I need to do this, I usually work with telecentric lenses and objectives. Much of my work is in liquid at 1.5-8x, and in that range a lens combo using a reversed MFT lens in fron...

Re: How Stupid Can Someone be? How about you?

Guess maybe I should have bought all 5? Well, maybe not the one with the fungus spot... I've done more stupid things than I can keep track of. Last week I paid for a two-hour taxi ride to a site I needed to surveyu with a drone. Forgot the cable connecting the controller to the tablet that runs the...
