Marine Diatom ID 4000x

Hi can anyone ID this diatom found in filtered seawater? Sample collected off Malibu CA. Unfortunatley the filter used did not allow for good digital images. Therefore this was taken directly from the SEM screen with phone camera. Thanks!

Re: Fun with acetaminophen

These are great! Was pure acetaminophen, or a tylenol capsule dissolved in the alcohol?

Olympus ULWD CDPlan 40x

Not the greatest for normal microscope use, but the adjustment collar (0-2mm) ring is removable, maybe useful for a stacking rig? Small WD though, 3.82mm according to spec sheet. Outside is dirty w scratches, optics are nice and clear, collar is very stiff, easily adjustable with wrenches +soft padd...

Microscope stage Vs objective Y Axis Movement

On a traditional microscope, what are the pros/cons of having the stage move in y axis vs the objectives/head? I have two olympus BH2s, one was modified by the lab to allow the objectives/neck/head to move while stage is immobile, similar to the old AO microscopes. My stock BH2 allows the stage to m...

Re: Art of Physics & Chemistry

Nice! all single amino acids or mixtures?

I especially like the "crackle" effect on some.

Re: Polarisation: a brief dalliance with glycine

These are great and I definitely see the koi swimming around. These shots particularly remind me of ceramic crystal glazes : https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/daily/ceramic-glaze-recipes/glaze-chemistry/the-new-world-of-crystalline-glazes-developing-beautiful-crystals-in-reduction/ These glazes work by...

Chemical Mixture Polarized Light

In an effort to one up those posting polarized chemicals with long names here is a contender: a mixture of a proprietary carboxylate salt, sodium phosphate, N,N-Diethyl-p-Phenylenediamine salt, and Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt. Taken all together it may have the highest letter count...

Re: Paracetamol XPL

I like it! is this with or without coverslip? I notice theres some dark spots on the right side, is that dust on your camera/optics or dust on the crystals? When making crystal melts or solutions I really try to filter them thru coffee filter and make sure no dust lands on the slide when crystallizi...

Polarized Organic Potassium Salt

Here are some pics of a potassium salt evaporated from a water solution. I really like this salt because you seem to get a variety of shapes and patterns. Its fun as it tends to form these clusters of trapezoid/hexagonal shapes too. 2x, 10x, and 20x objectives and 533nm tint plate used. Last two ima...
