Mantis

Found this mantis a couple of weeks ago and sort of adopted her. As it was very warm over the last few days, so I let her spend some time outside, where she is pondering her existence:

Re: Found mantis - now what?

Thanks for the feedback. I made an enclosure with a small clear bucket, some bedding and a few sticks. Fed her two crickets already, which is quite the gruesome spectacle. Didn't get around to take any photos yet, but she seems content for now...After reading up a bit more, this seems to be a Chines...

Found mantis - now what?

Just came home to find a big praying mantis clinging to one of the windows. Might be a European or Carolina Mantis and will make a great subject to photograph. For now I put it in a large plastic container with a moist paper towel and some sticks and leaves. I would assume it'll die soon outside, so...

Re: Nikon Plan Apo 100x 1.40 oil DIC H

Just giving this a bump, as it has been lingering on eBay for quite a while now. It's listed for $790; I'd discount it by $100, if someone were interested here.

Re: Jumper in a different way

@Saul: Thanks for the hint - looks obvious now.
Also, thanks for the tutorial link. I had no problem seeing the cross-eyed 3D image in the 2nd video. But try as I might, it still doesn't work with forum images...

Re: Jumper in a different way

I can't make these stereo images pop no matter how long I stare at them, so I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at. Did this poor guy lose its head?

Thanks for pointing that out, I was not aware of that (or if I ever was, I probably forgot about it - getting to that age..).

Re: Grass hopper, tail end

Yes, the structure in the background comes from the texture. The brighter yellow/red-ish hue comes from an out of focus portion of the leg, though.

Re: Grass hopper, tail end

It's actually an overlay added in together with the texture in Affinity Photo. I started adding these textures to my stacks a while ago and I really like the look (plus it seems to obscure remnants of halos quite well). The swirl on top of the texture seemed to work well for this one.

Thanks - might give it a try, although it's dried up and caked on now.
In the meantime, here's the the grasshopper's leg:

Grass hopper, tail end

Mity 5x (on shortened tube, so effectively approx. 3x), Fuji X-T2 After freezing this grass hopper there was a brownish, very sticky secretion around the mouth part, which I was so far not able to remove (washing, sonication - anyone know what it is and how to get rid of it?). That made the front co...
